Nigerian Schools Enhance Security Amid Terror Threats

In response to increasing insecurity and terrorist threats, schools and churches in Nigeria are implementing enhanced security measures. Findings by Sunday PUNCH indicate that some school managements have created escape routes, installed surveillance cameras, and strengthened perimeter fencing.

The Office of the National Security Adviser issued a warning on August 27, 2026, urging vigilance against potential attacks from terrorist and bandit groups. Bashir Oyewo, First Vice-President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, stated that the union is working with the government and security agencies to improve safety for teachers and pupils, particularly in rural areas.

The National President of the Parents-Teachers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Hussein Danjuma, mentioned that additional security personnel are being engaged in schools to support government efforts. Bolaji Adekoya, a school principal in Ikorodu, Lagos State, confirmed that escape routes have been created and pupils trained on their use in case of an attack, emphasizing the need for preparedness.
