Australia Sees 32% Drop in International Student Visas

According to a report by ICEF Monitor, international student visa applications in Australia have fallen by 32% from 2023 to 2025. This decline is attributed to several factors, including rising costs, stricter visa policies, and an increased refusal rate for applications.

The report highlights that the number of new students entering Australia is no longer sufficient to replace those leaving the system, particularly in the higher education sector. The tightening of policies over the past three years has been identified as a key driver of this decline, with the student visa application fee reaching AU$2,000, one of the highest globally.

The report also notes that while higher education enrollment is projected to increase by 9.7% from 2024 to 2025, the fall in demand from countries like China, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh poses significant challenges for Australia's education pipeline.
