Iran Requests FIFA to Move 2026 World Cup Matches

The Iranian Football Federation, led by President Mehdi Taj, has formally requested FIFA to consider relocating the 2026 World Cup matches from the United States due to escalating security concerns for Iranian players. This request comes in light of increased tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the U.S., particularly following recent military strikes.

U.S. President Donald Trump had previously questioned whether Iran would attend the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Iran is set to compete against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle. A spokesperson for Iran expressed fears for the safety of players traveling to American venues, emphasizing that the current conditions do not provide a safe environment for participation.

Despite these concerns, Iran has qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup and has not officially withdrawn from the competition, as stated in a message from the national team on Telegram.
