Football Fans Kill Opposition Player in Bayelsa Clash

Tensions flared in Bayelsa during a football match when a disagreement broke out between players from two teams. The misunderstanding escalated into a confrontation on the field, resulting in the death of an opposition player identified as Thomas Ogbianawei.

Following the match, members of the Opuama team encountered young indigenes from Eniwari, leading to an attack that left several injured. The situation worsened as the community mourned the deceased, prompting local leaders to appeal for restraint among the youth to avoid further escalation.

Hon. Target Segibo, the chairman of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, confirmed the appeal for calm and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

Bayelsa State Police spokesman DSP Musa Moha confirmed that an investigation has commenced to arrest suspects connected to the killing.
