AS Roma Fans Banned for Fascist Salute During Match

Sixteen fans of AS Roma have received bans from stadiums across Italy for performing a fascist salute during a Serie A home game against Atalanta. The incident occurred during a match on September 5, which AS Roma won 2-1, with goals from Mario Hermoso and Matias Soule.

The bans, issued by Rome police, range from one to five years and extend to AS Roma matches played abroad as well as national soccer team fixtures. Additionally, four of the banned supporters are required to report to police during AS Roma matches.

The salute was displayed by fans in the Curva sud section, known for its hardcore supporters. Displays of far-right sentiment are prevalent among certain groups of hardline fans, referred to as ultras, in Italian soccer.

The fascist salute is illegal in Italy, and courts evaluate such gestures on a case-by-case basis, with potential prosecution under laws against the revival of the fascist party and incitement of racial hatred.
