UNICEF Launches Podcast to Empower Girls in Kano

On International Women's Day, UNICEF inaugurated the "Ye Girl" podcast in Kano, Nigeria, aimed at amplifying the voices of adolescent girls. The event, led by UNICEF's adolescent development specialist Ngozi Izuora Songu, brought together girls, government representatives, civil society organizations, and media to discuss critical issues affecting girls aged 9-19.

The podcast serves as a youth-driven digital platform where girls can safely express their concerns on topics such as education, mental health, menstrual hygiene, HPV prevention, gender equality, and climate action. Izuora Songu emphasized the challenges faced by adolescent girls in Nigeria, including school dropout rates, harmful gender norms, early marriage, and limited access to health information.

The initiative seeks to create opportunities for dialogue and increase girls' participation in decision-making processes. UNICEF's focus includes amplifying girls' voices, expanding access to information and services, and strengthening leadership participation.

The organization calls for increased investment in girls' education and adolescent-friendly services.
