Iyabo Obasanjo Resigns from APC After Gubernatorial Loss

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, announced her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a letter dated May 31, 2023, addressed to Ogun State APC Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi. Her resignation comes two months after she lost the party's gubernatorial ticket for Ogun State to Solomon Adeola, who is popularly known as Yayi.

Obasanjo expressed her dissatisfaction with the consensus arrangement that produced Adeola as the candidate for the 2027 elections, arguing that the process did not comply with APC's stipulated guidelines. She noted that there was no prior meeting with candidates and criticized the lack of acknowledgment of her presence at the meeting.

Despite her reservations, she accepted the outcome and congratulated the consensus candidate, emphasizing the importance of party unity. However, she expressed disappointment over the treatment she received from the APC, stating that her requests for feedback went unanswered.

Obasanjo formally joined the APC in January 2026 and indicated that she would not remain in a party where she felt disrespected.
