Jailbreaks Reduced Under Tinubu – Tunji-Ojo

During an interview on Channels Television Politics Today, Tunji-Ojo stated that the number of jailbreaks has reduced under the administration of President Bola Tinubu since 2023. He disputed claims of seven jailbreaks, stating that the actual number is lower.

The minister highlighted notable cases in Nasarawa, Niger, and Borno states, attributing the incidents to various factors such as a collapsed fence and flooding. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the need for improved biometric record systems following recent escapes.

He revealed that 16 inmates had escaped, with seven recaptured and security agencies pursuing the remaining nine. The minister disclosed that Nigeria has 246 correctional centers, some of which are over a century old and undergoing rehabilitation.

He also mentioned plans to collaborate with state governors to address challenges within the correctional system.
