Maduro Supports Dialogue Ahead of Venezuela Talks

Nicolas Maduro, the imprisoned former leader of Venezuela, welcomed “any path to dialogue” as political transition talks are set to begin in Caracas. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in a US military raid in January and are currently held in a New York detention center on charges related to drug and firearms trafficking, to which they have pleaded not guilty.

His message, posted on his official Telegram account, emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation among Venezuelans. The upcoming talks involve representatives from Venezuela's interim government, led by Delcy Rodriguez, and opposition leaders, including Dinorah Figuera.

Notably, the main opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, will not participate in the discussions. Jorge Rodriguez, the chief government negotiator and brother of the interim president, stated that the talks will address post-earthquake assistance and the reinforcement of democracy.

Venezuela faces significant challenges, including a devastated economy and the aftermath of devastating earthquakes that killed over 5,500 people.
