Maduro Shares First Photos from US Detention Amid Charges

Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro released his first photographs since being detained in the United States in January. The images, posted on Sunday through X and Telegram, show Maduro in a grey tracksuit, appearing thinner than before.

He directed the message to his family and supporters, expressing strength and confidence. The photographs were timestamped June 25, following twin earthquakes in northern Venezuela that killed over 6,500 people.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are facing drug trafficking and firearm possession charges, which they deny. They were reportedly taken from Caracas by US special forces and have been in custody in Brooklyn, New York.

A source indicated that Maduro lacks access to newspapers or the internet but can communicate with family and lawyers for limited time each month. Their trial is set for June 1, 2027, as announced by a federal court in New York.

This communication coincided with interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez's announcement of a significant oil agreement with the United States.
