Japan Raises Visa Stay Requirement for Permanent Residency

Japan has implemented stricter permanent residency rules, raising the visa stay requirement from three years to five years, as reported by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. This new regulation is already in effect and stipulates that first-time visa applicants will now receive a maximum duration of two years, with a three-year visa option available under limited circumstances.

Those currently holding residency status will receive a decision by March 31, 2027. The recent changes reflect a significant shift in labor policy, as Japan anticipates allowing approximately 820,000 foreign workers to enter the transport and logistics sector over the next five years.

This adjustment is in response to growing concerns about labor shortages, particularly among truck delivery drivers. Notably, applicants under Japan's highly skilled professional visa program will continue to have expedited access to permanent residency.

The government is also considering introducing Japanese language proficiency requirements for permanent residency applicants, with discussions expected to take place around April 2027.
