Terry holds a UEFA Pro License and a FIFA Diploma in Leadership, while McFarlane possesses only a UEFA B License. The club officials believed that McFarlane's close working relationship with Maresca and his tactical understanding were crucial in the immediate aftermath of Maresca's exit.

Terry's aspirations to step into senior management have been evident, having previously served as an assistant to Dean Smith at Aston Villa and applied for several roles in the English Football League without success.
