Senate President Declares Ondo South Seat Vacant

On Tuesday, during a plenary session of the National Assembly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant. This decision followed the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria's permanent representative to the United Nations, which necessitated the vacancy.

Akpabio stated that the change in status of the lawmaker who previously occupied the seat required formal declaration to allow the process of replacement to begin. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take immediate steps to fill the vacancy, instructing the electoral body to conduct a bye-election within 30 days in accordance with existing laws.

The Senate President directed the clerk of the National Assembly to formally communicate the resolution to INEC to ensure swift action and avoid delays in representing the people of Ondo South.
