Deputy Speaker Kalu Earns PhD from University of Calabar

Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree during the 38th convocation ceremony at the University of Calabar on Saturday. His doctoral research, which was recognized for its outstanding quality, focused on the effectiveness of anti-terror legislation in Nigeria and the associated human rights challenges, drawing lessons for emerging democracies.

Kalu's thesis was titled "Evaluating the Efficacy of Anti-Terror Legislation in Nigeria: Human Rights Challenges and Lessons for Emerging Democracies." He emphasized the rigorous journey of obtaining a PhD, highlighting the sacrifices made throughout the process. Kalu, who has previously earned an LL.B and LL.M from the same institution, reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to education and contributing to the development of contemporary policy in areas such as counter-terrorism and democratic governance.
