Kalu Commends Tinubu for Signing Kampala Convention Law

On Tuesday, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu praised President Bola Tinubu for signing the Kampala Convention into law, describing it as a landmark move towards restoring the dignity and rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria. Kalu spoke during a courtesy visit from a delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, led by Dori El Doueihi, in Abuja.

He acknowledged the contributions of Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi in the legislative process that led to the signing of the act. Kalu emphasized that the law not only strengthens legal protections for displaced persons but also serves as a model for other African countries.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring that the law is implemented effectively at the subnational level and that it does not remain merely a legislative formality. Kalu expressed the ultimate goal of facilitating the safe return of displaced persons to their communities, ensuring they do not remain in camps for generations.
