Kano State Implements Guidelines for Adolescent Education

Kano State has officially adopted re-entry guidelines aimed at supporting married adolescents and teenage mothers in continuing their education. The guidelines were developed following a two-day stakeholder consultation workshop organized by AC Charity with support from the Malala Fund.

Dr. Hassana Shuaibu, a senior program officer at AC Charity, noted that Kano is the first state to adopt this domestic framework, which was originally developed by the federal government.

The guidelines ensure that adolescent girls, whether married or unmarried, can pursue education, particularly through non-formal pathways that offer flexible learning and childcare support. Dr.

Shuaibu emphasized the importance of strengthening the non-formal education sector to help girls achieve their educational goals, including obtaining the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and pursuing higher education. Dr.

Ali Haruna Abubakar, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, signed the document on behalf of the state government, highlighting the commitment to addressing gender issues in education. The 2026 budget allocates 40 percent to the education sector, reflecting the government's dedication to improving educational access for adolescent mothers.
