Kano State Allocates N21.29 Billion for Water Projects

The Kano State Government has approved a budget of N21.29 billion for water projects to combat the persistent water supply crisis in the state. This decision was disclosed by Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the Commissioner for Water Resources, in a statement issued on Thursday.

The approved funds include N9.9 billion earmarked for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa water treatment plant, which has a capacity of 150 million liters per day but is currently operating at only 27% capacity due to flood damage to its raw water pump station in 2022. Additionally, N11.39 billion will be allocated for the rehabilitation of the Challawa facility, which has a capacity of 220 million liters per day but is functioning at less than 30%.

The Goron Duts reservoir, a major distribution hub for Kano metropolis, is currently non-functional due to vandalism. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Kano State Government to upgrade infrastructure and improve service delivery, coinciding with a significant increase in the state's internal revenue, projected to rise to N74 billion in 2024.
