Kano Cleric Sentenced to Death Seeks Prison Relocation

A cleric from Kano, sentenced to death for blasphemy on December 15, 2022, is requesting a transfer from Kuje prison back to Kurmawa prison. The cleric, Kabara, argues that he needs access to essential documents, comprising 5,000 pages, to file his appeal, which is scheduled for April 3, 2026.

The documents were left behind during his transfer on October 14, 2025. Kabara has filed a petition with the court seeking three relief orders: to return to Kurmawa prison, to verify the completeness of the documents, and to restore missing records.

He has expressed concerns that despite multiple visits to the court, no warrant has been issued to facilitate his attendance at the appeal. Kabara was first arraigned on July 16, 2021, at the Upper Sharia Court in Kofar Kudu, Kano, where he faced four charges of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), leading to his conviction.
