Kano Lawmaker Abdulmajid Fata Joins NDC After APC Loss

Abdulmajid Mai Rigar Fata, a member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday, May 21, 2026. This decision followed his inability to secure a return ticket from the APC for the upcoming elections.

The formal reception of Fata into the NDC was conducted by Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and leader of the NDC, at his residence in Abuja. The event was confirmed by Saifullahi Hassan, a media aide to Kwankwaso, who shared the news via a Facebook post.

Alongside Fata, Kabiru Sani Auwal, a former vice chairman of Gwale Local Government, and Mahadi Isa Umar also joined the NDC. This mass defection comes in the wake of a Federal High Court ruling that allows politicians to seek alternative political platforms ahead of elections, which has been interpreted as a means to promote freedom of association and potentially trigger further defections from the APC.
