Kano Leaders Urge SGF for N5bn Fire Relief Fund

A high-powered delegation from Kano, including business leaders and senior government officials, met with George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, to lobby for the immediate release of a N5bn relief fund for victims of the Singer Market fire disaster. This meeting, reported by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, aimed to remind the SGF of the Federal Government's earlier commitment to assist traders affected by the fire.

The delegation expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving the intervention and urged for swift action to enable beneficiaries to access the funds. Key members of the delegation included Alhaji Sabiu Bako, the President of the Association of Kano Business Community; Dr Ismail Danmaraya, the Commissioner for Finance; and others.

Akume assured the delegation that their concerns were acknowledged and reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to support the victims. Vice President Kashim Shettima had previously announced the N5bn fund during a reception for Governor Abba Yusuf's defection to the All Progressives Congress on January 26, 2026.
