Kano Police Launch New Unit to Combat Violent Crime

On April 24, 2026, the Kano State Police Command inaugurated the Violent Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU) to address violent crimes, including armed robbery and kidnapping, which threaten public safety and economic activities. The unit was established under the directive of Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rulwan Disu, in line with the Nigeria Police Act of 2020.

Kano State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Bakori described the launch as a significant step towards ensuring a safer community. The VCRU will consist of carefully selected and trained officers who will operate under rigorous training tactics and adhere to human rights compliance.

The unit will engage with the community to gather real-time intelligence and improve security operations. Additionally, a civilian oversight board will be established to monitor the unit's activities, comprising civil society leaders, traditional rulers, legal practitioners, and community representatives.

A dedicated public complaint desk and emergency hotline will also be created to enable residents to report violent crimes promptly.
