Edo Police Launch New Anti-Violent Crime Unit

On May 12, 2026, the Edo State Police Command officially launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Benin City, headed by CSP Osagi Godspow Etinosa. This specialized unit is part of a renewed strategy to combat violent crimes, including kidnapping and robbery, in Edo State.

The VCRU is designed to operate with a strict focus on intelligence-driven tactics, differing from previous approaches. It emphasizes professional conduct and adherence to human rights, as outlined in the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

The unit is not authorized to engage in arbitrary stop-and-search operations or profiling of citizens. Members have undergone mandatory training in human rights, marksmanship, and investigative procedures, ensuring accountability and protection of lives and property.

The initiative aligns with directives from IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu to enhance police capabilities and improve crime investigation tactics across the state.
