Abuja Police Launch New Violent Crime Response Unit

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced the creation of a unified Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to improve the response to violent crime in Abuja. This decision was made during a security meeting on April 17, 2026, led by Commissioner of Police Ahm Sanusi.

The VCRU will merge existing tactical squads into a single unit, focusing solely on violent crime within the FCT. The initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and discipline among police officers.

Sanusi noted that while the crime rate in the FCT remains relatively low, there is a need for sustained vigilance and a proactive approach to emerging security threats. The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, emphasized zero tolerance for misconduct among officers, warning against extortion and harassment, which will attract strict disciplinary measures.

The command also urged residents to support security agencies by providing credible information to maintain peace in the area.
