Kano Spends N1.5bn on Mass Wedding for 1,500 Couples

Kano State has completed a large-scale wedding program that provided support to 1,500 couples, with the state government investing N1.5 billion in the initiative. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the completion of the Auren Gata scheme at a reception where newly married couples received furniture and other household assistance.

The program was designed to help couples not only marry but also establish their homes with adequate social, economic, and material resources. The initiative fulfills a major campaign promise made by Governor Yusuf during his pre-election tour across all 44 local government areas of Kano State ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The N1.5 billion allocation covered multiple components, including comprehensive medical screenings for all brides and grooms to protect their health and that of their future children, along with pre-marital counseling workshops for the couples. At the reception, the governor addressed the newly married couples and emphasized the importance of building sustainable marriages.

He urged them to practice patience, maintain justice and fairness in their homes, and demonstrate mutual respect toward each other. Governor Yusuf framed marriage as an act of worship and encouraged the couples to structure their marital relationships according to Islamic teachings from the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

The Auren Gata program represents one of the Kano State Government's flagship social welfare initiatives since the current administration took office. The completion of the program demonstrates the state's commitment to providing direct support to residents during major life events.

Couples who benefited from the scheme received practical household items alongside financial assistance, enabling them to begin their married lives with foundational support.
