Kano Hisbah Board Warns Against Wedding Extortion

The Kano Hisbah Board issued a warning to its officials and other government personnel against extorting couples participating in a mass wedding program funded by the Kano State Government, amounting to ₦1.5 billion. Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, Deputy Commander General of the board, stated that reports had emerged of individuals falsely demanding payments from intending couples for accessing services under the program.

He clarified that no official is authorized to collect money, as all services, including application forms, household items, clothing, premarital medical examinations, and transportation, are provided free of charge. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf initiated the program to serve as a public service, aiming to benefit 3,000 prospective couples.

The Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health, has conducted mandatory medical screenings for participants to assess their health status before the marriages are solemnized. Couples are encouraged to report any extortion attempts to the Hisbah office or relevant authorities.
