Kano State Launches Mass Wedding for Muslims and Christians

The Kano State Hisbah Board, represented by Mujahideen Aminuddeen, announced a mass wedding program that will be open to both Muslims and Christians, aiming to facilitate marriage for underprivileged families. This initiative, supported by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is particularly focused on orphans and individuals who cannot afford marriage expenses.

The program is designed to strengthen families and reduce immorality associated with delayed marriages. It will provide a support package to help low-income individuals formalize relationships, with N1.5 billion earmarked to cater to 1,500 couples.

The last mass wedding took place in October 2023, where three Christian couples participated. Sheikh Muhammad Lawan Yakub commended the initiative for its potential to protect young people from immoral behavior and contribute to social stability.

Concerns were raised about previous couples entering marriages primarily for government support rather than lasting relationships. The program aims to empower beneficiaries and address poverty, which is a major cause of high divorce rates in Northern Nigeria.
