Kano Suspends Water Scheme Manager Over Vandalism

The Kano State government has suspended the manager of the Thoma Ghari water scheme, Thomas Ghari, due to significant vandalism and neglect of facilities. This decision was announced by Dr.

Dahiru M. Hashim, the Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, after an inspection tour revealed extensive damage to critical infrastructure.

The water scheme, intended to provide water supply services to three local government areas, has been non-functional for several years, with electrical wires stripped from the generator pump system. Despite a power project being completed just three months ago, the facilities have already been looted.

Dr. Hashim expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the scheme and noted that security personnel assigned to protect the facilities were allegedly found cultivating crops on the premises instead of fulfilling their security responsibilities.

The commission warned that individuals responsible for the vandalism would face legal consequences, and the suspended manager will remain so pending the outcome of a criminal investigation. The state government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is committed to restoring water infrastructure across Kano State.
