Kano State Plans to Rehabilitate 10,000 Drug Users

The Kano State Government has set a target to rehabilitate 10,000 drug users within one year as part of a strategy to address substance abuse and its association with violent crime. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, Chairman of the Kano State Multi-Joint Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, announced this initiative on Saturday.

The approach emphasizes rehabilitation over imprisonment, incorporating detoxification, skills acquisition, and economic empowerment. Rimin-Gado stated that the process will begin with detoxification, followed by rehabilitation programs that will equip beneficiaries with skills in areas such as tailoring, shoemaking, and garment production.

The initiative aims to address the links between drug abuse, unemployment, and violent crime, particularly among youths. Discussions with correctional authorities are underway to ensure that individuals released from correctional facilities can also access rehabilitation.

The program is designed to create economic opportunities and reduce drug dependence while strengthening the state’s economy.
