Kano State Bans Illicit Drug Sales, Restricts Movement

On Wednesday, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State signed Executive Orders prohibiting the sale, trafficking, and abuse of illicit substances throughout the state. The orders take immediate effect and include movement restrictions from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. in identified drug abuse hotspots.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that drug abuse poses a significant threat to public safety, security, and social stability. He established a Multi-Agency Anti-Substance Abuse Task Force to enforce these directives, which includes empowering security agencies to stop, search, arrest, and prosecute offenders.

Properties used for illicit drug activities risk forfeiture through the revocation of their Certificates of Occupancy. The task force is tasked with coordinating intelligence, enforcement operations, public awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs.

It is also mandated to identify and dismantle drug trafficking hideouts and prosecute those involved in such activities. Governor Yusuf assured the task force of adequate funding and resources to effectively carry out its responsibilities.
