Egbetokun Resigns as IGP After Meeting with Tinubu

Kayode Egbetokun has reportedly resigned from his position as Inspector General of Police (IGP) following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. Sources within the presidency confirmed that Egbetokun requested to step down during this meeting.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, preparations for a formal handover ceremony are underway, with an announcement expected later on Tuesday. Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023, and his appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

He was initially due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, the National Assembly amended the Police Act to allow for a fixed four-year term for the IGP unless removed by the president.

Egbetokun's tenure has been marked by controversies, including allegations of human rights abuses, despite public defense from the president. Tunji Disu is expected to assume the role of the new Inspector General of Police following the formal handover.
