Kenya to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships

Kenya has officially been awarded the right to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, a significant milestone as it will be the first edition of the global athletics competition held on African soil. The announcement was made by World Athletics during the 242nd World Athletics Council Meeting in Budapest.

Nairobi was chosen as the host city after successfully competing against the United Kingdom. This decision comes after Nairobi's unsuccessful bid to host the 2025 championships, which were awarded to Tokyo.

Kenya's credentials for hosting major athletics events have been bolstered by its successful organization of the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised Nairobi's compelling and emotional bid, stating that bringing the championships to Africa fulfills the federation's ambition and recognizes Kenya as a prominent athletics nation, with the sport deeply embedded in its culture.
