Nigeria's aviation authorities have committed to bridging operational divides between civil and military sectors after a tragic aircraft crash at Igbokoda in Ondo State. On Wednesday, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Chief of Air Staff, and Minister Festus Keyamo of Aviation and Aerospace Development met during a condolence visit.

Both leaders agreed to forge a unified framework capable of addressing the historical gaps separating the nation's civil and military aviation operations. They plan to institute joint protocols that tackle airworthiness standards, aircraft certification, pilot training programmes, and safety oversight mechanisms.

This partnership signals progress toward integrated knowledge-sharing between the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, two organisations that have customarily sustained distinct regulatory and operational systems. The Igbokoda aircraft crash resulted in fatalities affecting both air force personnel and civilians.

As a consequence, the federal government opted to respond. Keyamo's media office released details of the agreement, framing it as an opportunity to harmonise practices across certification, training, and capacity development between the two sectors.

When different aviation bodies employ divergent regulatory approaches, operational weaknesses can take hold. Through this partnership, the two organisations intend to align their standards for aircraft maintenance, crew qualification requirements, and safety incident response protocols.

Nigeria has traditionally operated parallel aviation oversight systems, with military air operations and the civilian sector each running independent approval processes and training standards. This collaborative approach aims to transform that situation.
