Kogi Government Opens 42 IDP Camps as Flood Hits 5 Communities, Urges Immediate Relocation

The Kogi State government has activated emergency measures by opening 42 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps due to severe flooding that submerged five communities in Ibaji and Kogi local government areas. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) executive secretary, Mouktar Atima, confirmed the dire situation caused by rising water levels in Rivers Niger and Benue.

Atima urged communities along the riverbanks to relocate to safer grounds to avoid further risks. Notably, 258 communities across eight local government areas have been marked as flood-prone areas, with the worst-hit communities being Ota Ofogbo, Itima, and Owara.

The government has commended proactive measures taken by the health commissioner to prevent casualties and has begun fumigation of the IDP camps.
