Atiku's Camp: Coalition Needed to Challenge Tinubu in 2027

Okonkwo, the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar's presidential campaign, asserted that a unified coalition is essential for any opposition candidate to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. During an interview with Ibeju Upgrade Media, he specifically addressed the prospects of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), who was ratified in May 2026.

Okonkwo argued that Obi would find it challenging to garner support in northern Nigeria, citing the 2023 election results as evidence of Obi's limited appeal in states like Kano. He further dismissed the notion that former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso could enhance an Obi ticket as a running mate, claiming that Kwankwaso's influence has diminished even within his own political base.

Okonkwo's comments come amid discussions among various opposition figures about forming a joint front for the upcoming elections, emphasizing that only a broad alliance could realistically challenge Tinubu's presidency.
