Kwankwaso's Son Named as NDC Deputy Governorship Candidate in Kano

Mustapha Musa Kwankwaso has been announced as the deputy governorship running mate for Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) standard-bearer for Kano State in the 2027 gubernatorial race. The selection was made public on Monday following a series of consultations among party leadership and key stakeholders, according to statements from party officials.

Mustapha, the biological son of former Kano State Governor and current Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, previously served as Commissioner for Youth and Sports under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration. He recently stepped down from that cabinet position, departing alongside three other commissioners when the governor's political alignments shifted.

Party spokesperson Habibu Saleh Mohammed confirmed the development and explained that the selection process involved extensive deliberations held at the former governor's residence in Kano. The NDC's selection committee considered Mustapha's track record as a businessman and his prior public service experience when recommending him for the ticket.

Party officials stated that Gwarzo accepted the recommendation and that Mustapha has since accepted the nomination. The announcement positions the father-and-son pair—Rabiu Kwankwaso as the NDC's 2027 vice presidential candidate and Mustapha as Kano's deputy governorship nominee—prominently in the party's electoral strategy.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), which currently controls Kano's government house, has criticized the appointment. APC Kano State Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa accused former Governor Kwankwaso of seeking to maintain political control of the state through his son's candidacy.
