Kwara Doctors Demand Better Pay and Working Conditions

The Nigeria Medical Association, Kwara State chapter, has expressed serious concerns regarding poor remuneration, illegal salary deductions, and severe manpower shortages in public hospitals. Dr Suleiman Rotimi, the state chairman, revealed these issues during a news conference in Ilorin on Monday, coinciding with the 2026 Physicians’ Week.
He stated that doctors in Kwara are among the lowest paid in Nigeria, with monthly deductions ranging from N30,000 to N50,000. The association highlighted the alarming doctor-to-patient ratio of over 9,000 patients per doctor, far exceeding the World Health Organisation's recommendation of one doctor for every 600 patients.
The NMA urged the state government to address these issues urgently to prevent further deterioration of healthcare services. Dr Rotimi noted that the ongoing industrial dispute could adversely affect patients who rely on public health facilities.
He also called for improved mental health support for doctors, emphasizing the need for safer workplaces and confidential medical services.
