Kwara State Tackles Teenage Pregnancy and Child Marriage

The Kwara State Government is taking significant steps to address teenage pregnancy and child marriage as part of its strategy to improve maternal and child health outcomes. Dr.

Amina El Imam, the State Commissioner for Health, disclosed these efforts during the 2026 Joint Annual Review of the health sector held in Ilorin. The initiatives include community sensitization campaigns and enhancing access to quality healthcare.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq's administration has focused on sustaining reforms in the health sector, leading to notable improvements in maternal health and family planning services. The review serves as a critical mechanism for stakeholders to evaluate sector performance, identify gaps, and agree on priorities for the upcoming year.

El Imam highlighted the need for intensified efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths and improve referral systems. The state has achieved a 97% treatment rate for malaria using artemisinin-based combination therapy across its 16 local government areas.

The review aims to guide future interventions and consolidate achievements in maternal and child health.
