Kwara State Reviews Action Plan to End Female Genital Mutilation

The Kwara State Government has reiterated its commitment to ending female genital mutilation (FGM) by reviewing its 2026-2030 action plan. Iyanu Lawal, the press secretary for the Ministry of Women Affairs, stated that the government is determined to eradicate this harmful practice through a multi-sector strategy.

During a stakeholder review meeting in Ilorin, Opeyemi Oluwakemi Afolashad emphasized the need for collaboration with traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and law enforcement agencies. The administration aims to strengthen the enforcement of relevant laws, including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act and the Child Rights Law, to protect women and children from abuse.

The government plans advocacy visits to traditional rulers and community leaders to reinforce commitment against FGM. Additionally, the National Human Rights Commission, represented by Jumok Olaoy, is intensifying sensitization efforts across communities.

Funk Balogun, chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, highlighted challenges in prosecuting FGM cases, including family interference. The state will also commemorate International Day Zero Tolerance for FGM to galvanize further action.
