Kwara Voters Prioritize Security and Jobs for 2027 Election

A pre-election survey conducted by the Africa Poll Institute across 16 local government areas in Kwara State from May 4 to May 11, 2026, shows that 66% of respondents identify insecurity as an urgent issue, followed by 55% prioritizing job creation and 48% focusing on unemployment. The survey covered 5,050 adults across 193 electoral wards through telephone interviews.

Key issues influencing voter preferences for the 2027 governorship election include security (72%), economic job creation (67%), and candidates' track records (62%). The poll indicates that 93% of respondents prefer candidates based on merit rather than religion, with only 5% voting strictly for Muslim candidates and 2% for Christian candidates.

Additionally, 96% of respondents expressed anticipation for the upcoming election, with 89% of the population owning permanent voter cards. However, there is a noted gap of 16% among youth aged 18-35 who have not yet collected their cards.

The methodology of the survey suggests a skew towards educated respondents, with 49% holding tertiary education.
