Labour Party Schedules Presidential Primary for May 23

The Labour Party has officially set May 23, 2023, for its presidential primary, as announced by interim national chairman Ken Asogwa in Abuja. This decision follows the party's approval of a timeline to conduct primaries in preparation for the 2027 general elections, ensuring compliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

The party's national executive committee (NEC) ratified this action, which includes holding governorship, senatorial, and House of Representatives primaries on May 15, 2023. Asogwa also highlighted the need for internal unity and conflict resolution within the party, particularly following recent disturbances at the party's secretariat.

The NEC plans to fill existing vacancies and appoint interim leadership to maintain administrative continuity until a substantive congress is conducted. Furthermore, the party is expanding its membership registration through a hybrid approach, combining digital and manual methods to enhance transparency and efficiency in line with the Electoral Act of 2026.
