Lagos Assembly Proposes Artisan Regulation Bill

The Lagos State Assembly is considering legislation to create a regulatory framework for the registration, certification, and economic inclusion of artisans and craftsmen. This proposal was discussed during a public hearing on a law to establish the Lagos State Artisans and Craftsmen Regulatory Board, held at the Lateef Jakande Complex.

The chairman of the House Committee on Industry, Commerce, and Cooperatives, Tobin Abiodun, emphasized the importance of artisans in the state's economy and acknowledged the challenges they face. Deputy Speaker Hon. Mojisola Meranda highlighted the bill's significance for the large number of residents engaged in artisanal work, aiming to standardize practices and protect their interests.

Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Bankole Ajigbotafe, supported the initiative as a step towards structuring the informal sector. Toriola Ajayi Rasheed from the Lagos State Council of Tradesmen and Artisans expressed the need for solutions regarding certification issues.

The proposed board would also facilitate workshops and training for practitioners.
