Lagos Launches Free Maternal and Child Health Week

On July 20, 2026, the Lagos State Government commenced the first round of the Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (MNCAH+N) Week, running until July 24. The initiative provides free healthcare services at public primary healthcare centres and outreach sites across Lagos.

Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, emphasized the program's goal of enhancing the health of mothers, children, adolescents, and families. Services include Vitamin A supplementation, deworming, immunization, antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, and health education.

The First Lady expressed concern over rising social issues, including over 4,000 reported rape cases in 2025, urging residents to report domestic violence. She warned against seeking care from unqualified birth attendants, linking their services to complications and deaths.

Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser on Health, noted the program's significance as a flagship public health initiative, originally developed by Lagos and adopted nationwide in 2010, targeting vulnerable populations.
