Lagos CP Threatens to Disband Task Force Over Misconduct

On Saturday, during a press briefing in Ikeja, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh warned that the Lagos State Environment Special Offences Unit could be disbanded due to ongoing misconduct, including allegations of extortion and human rights violations. Jimoh stated that the command would no longer tolerate unprofessional conduct among officers attached to the unit, particularly in light of rising complaints from residents.

He noted that the police would not shield officers found guilty of wrongdoing and urged the public to provide credible evidence to aid investigations. Recent complaints included a viral video showing the alleged arrest of a lawyer over a land dispute.

Jimoh confirmed that disciplinary actions had already been taken against five officers, who are now facing court charges. He reiterated that further verified cases of abuse could lead to the dissolution of the entire task force, which is undergoing reforms, including the deployment of newly screened officers and collaboration with civil society organizations to improve accountability and professionalism.
