Lagos Named West Africa's Top Climate-Resilient City

Lagos State has emerged as West Africa's most climate-resilient city, achieving a score of 86.3 points on the West Africa Climate Governance Index (WACGI), which evaluates climate governance across 209 sub-national governments in 15 ECOWAS nations. This ranking places Lagos ahead of other cities such as Kano, Abuja, and Greater Accra.

The WACGI assessment combines climate risk exposure, governance visibility, financial evidence, transparency, and implementation capacity. Lagos State's recognition aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action and the African Union's Agenda 2063.

The formal notification of this achievement was sent on July 8, 2026, by the WACGI, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration being commended for its climate governance structure. The WACGI aims to advance climate governance across ECOWAS member nations, and Lagos is set to be recognized as the best-performing sub-national government in climate governance in 2026.
