Lagos Launches Greenhouse Gas Registry for Climate Action

The Lagos State Government unveiled the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR), marking it as the first sub-national government initiative in Nigeria to create a comprehensive system for tracking carbon emissions. The event took place at the Central Business District in Alausa, Ikeja, attended by key figures including Professor Akin Abayomi, Commissioner for Health, and Dr.

Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA). Ajayi emphasized the Registry's role in measuring, monitoring, reporting, and verifying emissions across major economic sectors, aligning it with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s environmental agenda.

The initiative aims to enhance evidence-based policymaking and investor confidence in Lagos’s climate efforts. Professor Abayomi highlighted the Registry's significance in climate governance and public health, linking credible emissions data to climate finance.

Dr. Mofoluso Fagbeja, CEO of TPHG Technologies, noted that the Registry builds on a 2022 greenhouse gas inventory, revealing approximately 35,000 premature deaths annually in Lagos due to poor air quality.
