Lagos Engineer Accuses Police of N250,000 Extortion, Adding to Concerns of Misconduct

Uchenna Nwachukwu, a Lagos-based mechanical engineer, accused police officers attached to the Ajah area of the Lagos State Police Command of extorting N250,000 from him during a stop-and-search operation. Nwachukwu narrated his ordeal where he was stopped, harassed, and forced to pay the extortion money to retrieve his vehicle.

Despite reporting the incident to the police station, he has not received a refund. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of police misconduct in Lagos, with another recent case involving a plumber, Nifemi Oyerinde, who was extorted at gunpoint during a stop-and-search operation near Otedola Bridge.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson confirmed the incident and assured that the officers involved would be instructed to refund the money.
