Bishop Odedeji Urges Integrity in Legal Profession

Right Rev. James Odedeji, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, delivered a sermon titled “Faithfulness” at the 2026/2027 New Legal Year Special Service of the Lagos State Judiciary, held at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos. He warned judges and lawyers against allowing wealth, influence, or personal interests to compromise justice.

Citing Leviticus 19:15, he stressed that justice should not favor the wealthy or oppress the poor, stating, “Justice must not be sold... to those who can afford it.” Odedeji highlighted the importance of viewing judicial roles as sacred trusts, where decisions impact the liberty and lives of individuals. He referenced 1 Corinthians 4:2, emphasizing the need for faithfulness in their duties.

He cautioned that professional success without integrity could lead to moral failure, urging legal professionals to align their competence with sound character. He concluded by stating that the higher the office, the greater the responsibility to uphold justice.
