LASTMA Partners with China to Combat Lagos Traffic Issues

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), led by General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, is collaborating with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China to address traffic congestion in Lagos. This initiative was discussed during a high-level visit to the consulate, where Bakare-Oki and senior officials met with Chinese Consul General Her Excellency Yan Yuqing.

The meeting focused on leveraging Chinese technological expertise to tackle the complex traffic challenges in Lagos, which has a rapidly growing vehicular population. Bakare-Oki highlighted the necessity for LASTMA to adopt technology-driven approaches for real-time traffic monitoring, incident detection, and communication with road users.

He mentioned the agency's interest in deploying Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and emphasized the importance of integrating these technologies into Lagos's unique transportation environment. Yan Yuqing welcomed the initiative, advocating for stronger exchanges between Lagos and Chinese transportation authorities.

The collaboration aims to enhance operational efficiency and improve traffic management in Lagos.
