Lagos State Releases 43 Inmates to Decongest Facilities

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centers across the state as part of ongoing efforts to decongest custodial facilities and strengthen the criminal justice system. This initiative follows a similar measure in December 2025, where 91 inmates were released.

The governor's action is based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council and is executed under his prerogative of mercy as provided in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, emphasized that the releases are carefully vetted according to established legal and administrative guidelines.

The state government aims to address overcrowding in correctional centers while ensuring public safety and upholding the rights of inmates. Additionally, the government is committed to modernizing facilities and improving living conditions for inmates, which includes procuring transport services and renovating correctional buildings.
