Sanwo-Olu Approves Release of 43 Inmates in Lagos

On December 2025, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional facilities across Lagos State. This decision is part of ongoing efforts to decongest custodial centers and strengthen reforms within the criminal justice system.

Lawal Pedro, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, noted that this move is a strategic response to address overcrowding and improve correctional infrastructure. The governor's action is executed under his constitutional powers to release inmates, as conferred by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The beneficiaries of this release were selected based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to justice sector reform and aims to improve conditions within correctional facilities while upholding justice and the rule of law.
